The History

The Alaska State Defense Force is the successor of the Alaska Territorial Guard founded during World War II. After the war ended and Alaska became a state in 1959, the Territorial Guard was disbanded but was replaced by a state militia established by state statute. In 1984, the Alaska State Guard was formed; it was renamed in 1987 as the Alaska State Defense Force. In 2004, the name 49th Military Police Brigade (49th MP BDE) was also adopted for it. A later realignment of the command's structure has utilized the new designation of 49th Readiness Brigade (Separate), but the unit is still mainly known as the Alaska State Defense Force.

The Alaska State Defense Force Fund (ASDFF) is a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to assisting the Alaska State Defense Force (ASDF) in fulfilling their mission to provide a trained and organized state militia that defends the state of Alaska; supports the nation’s homeland security mission; and provides Defense Support of Civil Authorities (DSCA). Donations to the fund assist us in supporting ASDF with the vitally needed material, equipment, uniforms, and commercial training and services to support them i n executing their various tasks including providing statewide communications, emergency management, medical and logistical support, domain awareness, military police, chaplaincy, shelter management, and infrastructure protection. The ASDF is a charitable organization, your contributions of money, merchandise, or services is deductible to the extent allowed by federal income tax laws. Please join other citizens and businesses who are giving what they can toward this critical effort. If you wish to provide material, supplies, or equipment, please call the number above, and we will get back to you as soon as possible to arrange pickup.
